Over the Basin

Over the Basin

The second entry in this three-part window vignette series shifts from an evening view across the street to an intimate morning perspective over a sink basin. Framing a window directly behind a faucet and counter captures a familiar, contemplative ritual—looking out into the yard while washing hands or handling quiet tasks at the start of the day.

Through the multi-pane grid of the sash window, the gaze meets a fenced lawn and a dense screen of leafy green woods. The interior space is flooded with luminous, chartreuse and yellow washes that streak downward like morning sunlight filtering across the walls. Small domestic details—a hung hand towel, clean hardware lines, and a basket holding warm terracotta containers—anchor the interior, contrasting against the wild, textured tree canopy outside.

Technically, the piece was executed on Strathmore heavyweight paper using mixed media: pen and India ink for the clean architectural contours and pane structure, combined with transparent and opaque acrylic washes to build the atmospheric interior glow. Delicate stippling and contour hatching bring volume to the outdoor foliage, letting the grid of the window panes organize the natural view into distinct, bite-sized fragments of color.
